The victim, Greg Stolzenberg, had wanted to join the Rebels bikie gang’s Newcastle chapter when he was ordered to attend its Wickham clubhouse in May last year.
Court papers alleged Stolzenberg had attended a Raymond Terrace tattoo parlour days earlier and collected $200 in protection money on behalf on some Rebels before other gang members told the shop owner not to give any more money to the prospective member.
After being ordered to the clubhouse, Stolzenberg was told to get a sawn-off shotgun he had stashed at home before being told they were going to do a drug rip-off.
Instead, club sergeant-at-arms Julian Fletcher Ivory took Stolzenberg to Minmi Cemetery and beat him so badly he thought he was going to die.
Ivory, whose papers had his address listed as the clubhouse in Throsby Street, Wickham, pleaded guilty yesterday to wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of demanding money by force in company with intent to steal, relating to extorting money from the owner of the Raymond Terrace tattoo parlour.
Ivory will be sentenced in Newcastle District Court at a later date.
Court papers alleged some Rebels members had threatened other Hunter tattoo shop owners into handing over money for protection.
Stolzenberg told police he had got out of the car at Minmi Cemetery before Ivory smashed him across the legs with the sawn-off shotgun.
Several others allegedly came in on the beating.
‘‘To tell you the truth, I don’t know how I got out of there alive,’’ he told police.
