Police try to block Cold Chisel concert

South West police are trying to block Cold Chisel's concert in Margaret River on November 26 because it clashes with school leavers' celebrations, could attract bikies and will stretch police resources to the limit.

South West Supt Lawrence Panaia wants the concert at Sandalford Estate shifted to either before or after leavers' celebrations due to be held near Dunsborough from November 23 to November 26.

Supt Panaia described the timing of the concert as "irresponsible" and said he would ask Director of Liquor Licensing Barry Sargeant to refuse the appropriate liquor licence or impose tough conditions.

The concert's promoters said yesterday the concert was expected to attract 12,000 people and could not be moved.

Supt Panaia said at least 130 police would be needed in the region to control the events, with more than 8000 teenagers expected for leavers' celebrations.

"To have (the concert) on top of that, you're starting to stretch even the health service," he said.

Supt Panaia said while the Michael Buble concert at Sandalford Estate last year caused little trouble, a Cold Chisel concert was likely to attract a rougher crowd, including outlaw motorcycle gangs.

But Sandalford Estate chief executive Grant Brinklow said proper preparation would ensure minimal disruption to the South West.

Cold Chisel co-manager John O'Donnell said the band's appeal went beyond bikies to parents and children.

"Their fan base is also more female than you might expect," he said.

Cold Chisel lead singer Jimmy Barnes, 55, yesterday cancelled solo shows planned for next month because of health problems but is expected to recover for the band's long awaited national tour. Barnes had been battling flu after a gruelling European tour.
